Thursday 13th of September 2018 – Captain’s Prize (Bryan Phelan) Castle GC

Dear Fellow Past Pupils

As we say goodbye to another year, my message for 2018 for the past pupils of Synge Street is the three Rs – Renew, Re-engage and Reconnect. Let us make 2018 where we renew old school friendships, re-engage in attending one of the events the PPU organise such as the Business Lunch, Annual Dinner or one of the golf outings and to reconnect with the school in helping out the school in any way possible.

I would like to welcome Bryan Phelan (1967) as Captain of the PPU Golf Society in this special year where the Golf Society is celebrating its 70th year anniversary and his Captain’s Day is on Thursday 13th of September in the Castle Golf Club.

It is important that we get as many past pupils to go and find their golf clubs and attend one of the outings in this anniversary year.

The first outing of the season will be my President’s Prize on Friday 18th of May in the Grange Golf Club.

Please keep an eye on the PPU website for information on booking for the outings.

The Annual Dinner will be held on Saturday 24th of March in the renovated Alex Hotel (formerly known as the Alexander Hotel) Fenian Street, Dublin 2 where I look forward to meeting the past pupils of the anniversary classes of 1953/1958/1963/1968/1973/1978/1983/1988/1993/1998 and 2003 at the dinner.

The highlight of 2017 for me was the Business Lunch that was held on Friday 20th of October in Fitzwilliam Lawn Tennis Club where the guest speaker Dr John Bell gave an outstanding talk on Brexit and his times in Synger and the room paid him the ultimate compliment in a standing ovation.

The 5th Business Lunch will be on Friday 5th of October in Fitzwilliam LTC and I look forward to see you on the day.

Lastly on behalf of the committee I would like to the wish the students participating in the BT Young Scientist Exhibition success and good luck in the competition where the school has a marvellous record of achievements over the years.

I would like to thank Jim Cooke for all the guidance, inspiration, and help he gives to the students in assisting them with their projects. A true educator

I would like to wish one and all the very best for 2018

Till the next time

Damien Byrne
